Sunnidale Community Garden Gearing Up for Season Two

By Kyla Cotton
Plot renters at Sunnidale's Community Garden in Barrie are gearing up for their second season of community gardening.  This season, one third of the community gardeners are returning to re-rent their plots at the garden.  That's a good start to having an established set of gardeners ready to dig in again!

One gardener's comment:   "Being involved with the Sunnidale Community Garden was much more rewarding than just growing my own veggies.  I met a community of like minded individuals and we shared a common interest.  I am really looking forward to getting back out there this spring".

There will be some changes to the community garden this season.

There is a larger community plot available for first-time gardeners,  those looking for a more casual commitment, and those who weren't able to secure their own plot due to demand.

We will have two new volunteer coordinators who will communicate with plot renters to ensure policies are being met, and who will work with the City of Barrie to report on the garden's outcome.
Over a six-week period in the spring, our previous coordinator will teach three new programs which will be listed in the Spring/Summer Recreation Guide 2011.  She will also be involved with the community plot and will mentor the new coordinators.

Plot space is limited with the Sunnidale Community Garden. Interested people are encouraged to inquire about plot availability.  At $20 rental fee (plus tax) it's no wonder that last year, the plots were all rented out by the end of March.
